How Long Does a Montana LLC Take? Order to Plates, the Real Timeline
The LLC is filed the day you order. Your temporary registration is issued the same day your paperwork is complete. Plates ship in three to five business days after that, and the Montana title arrives in two to three weeks.
For a car you already own with a clean title in hand, that is about a week from order to plates. The clock starts when we have the documents, not when you pay. Financed cars, dealer paperwork and missing titles each add time, and this guide says how much.
The LLC is filed the day you order. Your temporary registration is issued the same day your paperwork is complete. Plates ship in three to five business days after that, and the Montana title arrives by mail in two to three weeks. For a car you already own with a clean title in hand, the realistic answer to “how long” is about a week from order to plates on the car. The clock does not start when you pay. It starts when we have the documents.
This guide marks where the days actually go, because the slow spots are never the ones people expect.
The timeline for a straightforward car
| Day | What happens | Who is waiting on whom |
|---|---|---|
| Day 0 | You order. We file the LLC with the Montana Secretary of State the same day and send you the document list. | Us, on you, for documents |
| Day 0 to 2 | You send the title, your ID and a VIN photo. Most people do it the same evening. | Us, on you |
| Day the file is complete | We file title and registration with the county. Temporary registration issued the same day. You can drive on it. | Nobody |
| Plus 3 to 5 business days | Physical plates ship by UPS, tracked to your door. | You, on the county and UPS |
| Plus 2 to 3 weeks | The state prints and mails the Montana title. It goes to the lender if there is one. | You, on the state |
“Business days” means the county’s days. A filing on a Friday afternoon is a Monday filing. Montana’s state holidays count too.
What adds time, and how much
A financed car: a few days to a couple of weeks
The lender has to release the title to Montana or authorize the electronic transfer. Big lenders with a title department turn the verification letter around in days. Smaller lenders can take two weeks, usually because the request sits in someone’s inbox. We chase. The financed-car guide explains the lender step.
A dealer purchase: whatever the dealer takes
The dealer sends us the manufacturer’s certificate of origin or the title. Some do it the day of the sale. Some batch their out-of-state paperwork weekly. Ask the finance office when they send it, and ask for tracking. The dealer guide covers what to say.
A missing title: weeks, not days
A bonded title needs a VIN inspection where the car sits, a bond placed, and a title application that the county reviews rather than stamps. Plan on weeks. The no-title guide has the steps.
A signature in the wrong place: a week you did not need to lose
The single most common delay is a title signed in the wrong box, or by one of two owners when both have to sign, or a seller who signed before the buyer’s name was filled in. We check every title the day it arrives and tell you the same day if something needs redoing. Photograph the title before you mail it, so we can catch it before the paper is in transit.
Can it go faster?
The temporary registration is already same-day, and you can drive on it, so for most people there is nothing to speed up. The plates are a physical object that has to be printed and shipped; three to five business days is the county’s pace and ours. The title is printed by the state and we cannot hurry it, but you rarely need the paper title in hand until you sell.
If you are buying from a dealer out of state and need to drive the car home, the dealer’s temporary tag covers the trip and our temporary registration takes over when the file lands. Nobody has to wait for plates to leave the lot.
What you can do to keep it to a week
- Order the LLC before you buy the car, so it exists when the dealer or seller writes the paperwork
- Photograph the front and back of the title and send the photos before you mail the original
- If financed, give us the lender’s title department contact on day 0
- Send the VIN photo from the door jamb or dash, legible, the first time
Questions people ask about timing
Can I drive before the plates arrive?Yes, on the temporary registration we issue the day the file is complete. Keep it in the car with your insurance card.
Does the LLC take longer than the registration? No. We file it the day you order and it is usually active within a business day. The registration waits on your documents, not on the LLC.
What if I need plates by a specific date?Tell us the date when you order. If the documents are in our hands a week before, you will have them. If the car is financed or untitled, give it longer and we will say how much.
Do I have to renew, and how long does that take?Vehicles with permanent registration never renew. Others renew annually with the county; we handle the filing and it does not interrupt your driving. The annual cost guide lists what recurs.
