Montana permanent plates: register once, keep them as long as you own it. If your vehicle qualifies, Montana registers it one time and never asks for a renewal again, for as long as your LLC owns it. Cars, SUVs, vans and pickups rated 1 ton or less qualify at 11 years old, counted from the model year (MCA 61-3-562); motorhomes at 11 years (MCA 61-3-321(7)). Motorcycles and quadricycles (MCA 61-3-313, 61-3-321(8)), travel trailers and fifth wheels (MCA 61-3-321(9)), trailers under 26,000 lb declared weight (MCA 61-3-303(10)) and snowmobiles (MCA 61-3-321(11)) are permanent from the first registration. Boats, jet skis and sailboats 12 ft and longer get a one-time permanent decal, not a plate (MCA 61-3-321(10), 23-2-512); off-highway ATVs and UTVs get a one-time permanent decal (MCA 61-3-321(5)). Trucks rated over 1 ton and semis are registered by weight and renew every year. Permanent registration lasts for as long as the owner owns the vehicle (MCA 61-3-562(3)) and may not be transferred to a new owner (MCA 61-3-562(5)): at a sale it ends, the plates stay with the seller, and the buyer registers the vehicle fresh. The plate carries a PERM tab instead of a month and year. Insurance is still required. A newer vehicle renews yearly and we move it to permanent registration the year it turns 11. ZeroTaxTags forms the Montana LLC, files the title and permanent registration with the Montana MVD, and ships plates in 3 to 5 business days. Call 406-730-3000.
